The second name is that of the church. This one too is a term designating the universal as a figure. Within what regime? The “sacred”? Here, the category of the “sacred” is irrelevant. The sacred involves other relations, which we shall examine later on. To determine the universal returning within the church, it is more useful to appeal to its Greek meaning.

The world of which there is an image or spectacle is outside of myself and faces me; and soon enough such is the idea of mundus. Of the cosmos we are a part, or a center: it includes and surrounds us. The cosmos can globally enclose an “us” that questions it, an assembly—and thus, a theater. One had to exit the cosmos for the world to be presented to me, frontally, as image and spectacle. This is what I call the invention of painting here. It is an idea foreign to theater, because the theater is not from that time.

Nothing in this calls for the concept of Europe, as such, though we should account for the fact that today Greece is said to be a part of this continent, and that the extension might thus cover something that perhaps (since Kant does not say this) resembles what we call Europe. 17 It is in this first sense that one may say that the universal “precedes” Europe conceptually; Europe is not its prerequisite. * We may also describe as a concrete process what we just laid out as an ideal development—it is a matter of chronology.
