I was nine years old then.  A small cash settlement was eventually awarded for my care.  Then Congress extended the draft to include forty­five­year­olds.  The doctors who treated him strongly urged him to get out of the city because it was so full of pollution and poison that he was in constant danger of infections that could cause loss of his legs or even prove fatal.  Although my father's sympathies were with the left wing, his health prevented him from actively supporting the new Party.  In fact, my father was completely fed up with the "old Socialists" because of their endless talk without deeds.

I observed these developments with increasing apprehension that nothing but disaster lay ahead for the working people and my conviction grew every able bodied person should work to change a system that was failing.  I waited tables in the dormitory and mowed grass for several sororities.  So the defense of them was an actual matter of life or death.  And in 1937, the Supreme Court did agree with attorney Goodman's appeal, striking down the Oregon Criminal Syndicalism law as unconstitutional.  A representative of the Communist party, Fred Walker, spoke spiritedly of the need for all believers in democracy to rally behind this legal case to insure that the principles of democracy be preserved.
